Operating System: Windows XP/2000/NT CPU: 200 MHz Pentium (or equivalent) processor Memory: 256MB or more Hard drive usage: Up to 35 MB Sound: Windows compatible sound card After installation we strongly recommend that you read the "Getting Started" document. "Getting Started" has a tutorial to help all users get past the graphing/plotting/audio features of AGC learning curve quickly and easily. It is also extremely important that people who are blind or visually-impaired read the document "AGC Magnification, and Use with Screen Readers" before starting AGC to learn about useful AGC features and in particular how to configure screen readers not to conflict with self-voicing in AGC. "Getting Started" and "AGC, magnification, and use with screen readers" can be opened using options in the "Audio Graphing Calculator" folder opened from the Start menu. Detailed instructions on how to choose such options are in the final paragraph below. AGC can be downloaded and it is also available as a CD. The application is fully functional for a 30 day trial period. At the end of the trial period it can be used only if a registration license is purchased.

Starting the installation of the downloaded AGC files
You will download the file into a directory on your hard drive, normally the c:/temp directory or your Desktop. Open Windows Explorer and run the AGC_*.msi file.

Starting the installation from the CD
Unless autostart has been disabled in your computer, the CD will start automatically when you put into your CD ROM drive. However autostarting on most computers usually takes several seconds, so be patient. If the CD does not autostart, open Windows Explorer, go to the CD ROM drive, and run the file AGC_*.msi.

Continuation of Installation:
After following the appropriate step described above, your screen should display a dialog box with selections "setup", "Cancel", and "About". The "about" selection will bring up a text box giving the system requirements necessary to install AGC. Tab or mouse to the "start installation" button and click it.

A few seconds later another screen should appear that has four items: "Begin installation" button, "Exit" button, "Install the Microsoft voices" checkbox, a text field with brief instructions on installation.

Before this installation screen appears you may get a dialog box warning you to close down all applications so that the installation program can install system files. It is not necessary to turn off screen readers, Windows Explorer, or instructions in applications such as Notepad or Wordpad. It is prudent to turn off other applications before continuing the installation.

Unless you do not want to use the self-voicing ability of AGC or for some reason you do not want the Windows speech engine installed, be sure that the checkbox to install the Microsoft speech engine is checked. Then tab or mouse to the "Begin installation" button and click it. Even if you already have the Microsoft speech engine, we recommend that you install again to be sure you have the most recent version.

The installation routine should be straightforward. You will be given a number of options during installation. Unless you are an expert and have some good reason for choosing something other than the default values, we strongly suggest you simply click on "continue" at each decision. You may be told that some file to be loaded is older than one already on your system and asked whether you wish to retain your newer file. You should choose "yes" to keep your newer file. We have used a number of older system files so AGC will work on almost any computer running Windows 95 or later. But it will also work with newer system files. Other applications may not, so you definitely should always keep the newest system file.

1. After clicking the "Begin installation" button you are asked whether you wish to use the default directory for AGC. Press "continue".

2. You will be asked whether you wish to use the default program group folder (Audio Graphing Calculator) for items installed with the program. Press "continue".

3. If you have a newer computer you will probably have a number of version conflicts. Press "yes" to retain all your newer files.

4. When installation is complete, focus will pass to a Notepad with the suggestions made in this document - that all users read the "getting Started" document and that users with visual impairments read the "AGC, magnification, and use with screen readers" document before starting AGC. You may wish to save that text file. Then close Notepad, and focus returns to the AGC installation program.

5. The final screen of the AGC installation routine tells you that the AGC installation has been completed, and you should click "okay".

You are now ready to start the AGC, We recommend that users with visual impairments first read "AGC, magnification, and use with screen readers" and that all users read "Getting Started". You may find these documents by opening the "Audio Graphing Calculator" folder under "Programs" in the Start menu.

The program itself is the first item in the menu, but you may select and open any of a number of related files instead. These files include "AGC, magnification, and use with screen readers", "Getting Started", the standard help file for AGC, and a HTML file of the full AGC operating manual. You may select any of these options with a mouse or, from the keyboard press CTRL-ESC or the Windows key to reach the Start menu, then TAB to the Programs menu and press ENTER. You may then TAB or press "a" until you select the Audio Graphing Calculator folder. Press ENTER to open the folder. Select the file you want to view and press ENTER. Text files will be launched in Notepad, and HTML files will be launched in your default web browser. Enjoy.
