Introduction |
|
|
The installation and calibration of
the IVEO™ Touchpad, if needed
by the user, must be completed before starting to use the IVEO™ Viewer. See the Touchpad manual.
If you would like to turn the speech off or on, or modify
the voice, you may do so from the Speech menu.
Pressing Ctrl+Alt+S or choosing Toggle Speech from the Speech menu turns
speech on if it is off and vice versa. If you would like the voice to sound
different, you can change speech options using the Speech Settings option in
the Speech menu (which can be accessed using Ctrl+Shift+S). Using the Speech
Settings command will bring up a dialog box in which you can select a different
voice from a list, change the rate of speech and change the pitch of
speech. Use the test button to find out
how the options you've chosen will sound. |

Opening a file |
|
|
To open a file,
press Ctrl+O or select and click the Open menu item in the File menu.
Focus is in the ‘file name' text field. Enter the list of
files in the current
directory by clicking on a file with the mouse or by pressing
Shift+Tab. Browse to the directory containing the file
you want. To get to the previous folder menu, use the combo box at the
top of
the dialog box if using the mouse or press Backspace. To open a folder,
select
and click the desired folder name. When you have browsed to it, select
the file
you wish to open, and then click OK. You may open files from
Windows Explorer. Clicking on the file
or selecting Open in the context menu opens the file in IVEO Viewer.

Printing or embossing a file |
|
|
Press
Ctrl+P or select and click the Print menu item in the File menu. If the printer displayed is not the one you
want to use, select the desired printer in the printer list. It will remain selected until changed or the
computer is turned off. Change any
desired options and then press ok. If the
‘Print Frame' option is selected in the Page Setup, ViewPlus embossers will
include the tactile bar code at the top (or right side if in portrait mode) and
an index number and title along the left side.
These are embossed in US
computer Braille. If the Print dialog items are being spoken by IVEO and a
screen reader, unselect “Read Print Dialog” in the Preferences item of the file
menu. |

Exploring a Map |
|
|
IVEO Viewer can be used to view graphics with audio feedback. In this tutorial you
will learn to read a map in audio. Instructions
include creation and use of a tactile map and use of the IVEO Touchpad for users who need these.
- Open the IVEO Viewer
program. If speech is on, it will
say “Welcome to IVEO” when loading is complete.
- Open the USAMap.svg file
contained in the C:Program FilesViewPlussamples folder. When the file is opened, the program
will say, "Document loaded title USA map” if speech is on.
- For users who need tactile copy, the map must either already be
available as a tactile copy or it must be embossed on a ViewPlus
embosser. If you wish to emboss it, check the page setup
parameters, then print to a ViewPlus embosser. Go to the ‘Page
Setup' item in the File menu. 8.5 x 11 or A4 Braille paper is
recommended. Set the paper size, make sure that landscape mode is
selected, and set the margins to whatever you find most
comfortable. The left margin should be at least 0.75 inches, and
the top margin at least 0.5 inches. Minimum right and bottom
margins of 0.25 inches are recommended. Be sure that the ‘Print
Frame' option is selected, that the paper size is set correctly in the
printer properties and that the ViewPlus embosser is on with the
correct paper loaded. Then print to that ViewPlus embosser.
- Calibrate your embossed printout
to the screen if the screen display has not already been calibrated. Clamp
the map you just embossed onto the IVEO Touchpad with the Braille index
and figure title under the clamp on the left side and the tactile barcode
dots at the top of the Touchpad.
- Explore the map using the
mouse, the stylus of a Tablet PC, a touch screen monitor, or by pressing
objects of the tactile printout on an IVEO Touchpad. Any action equivalent to a mouse-down
will select text or an object and, if speech is on, cause the text or the
title of the object to be spoken. On touch screens or Touchpads, only one
point should be pressed at a time. The IVEO application will read the titles for each state on the USA map as
they are selected.
- Use the zoom functions to get a
closer look.
Some of the
states, especially in the Northeast, are small. In the printout of the entire
country on one page, it can be difficult to tell where one state ends and the
next begins. You can get a closer look in several ways.
Zoom in on a
particular state
First, you
can zoom in on a particular state. Touch the state on the Touchpad to select
it. When the program reads the state's name, the state is selected. To zoom in
on that state, press Alt+V to open the View menu. Select the menu item 'Fit
selection to window'. This will expand
the state to the point that it fills the entire screen. To examine this zoomed
in view of the state with the Touchpad, print it, remove the copy of the full USA map from
the Touchpad and replace it with the new print out. It is often useful to zoom out one or two
steps with Page Down before printing to reduce the size of the object a bit in
order to include portions of all the states around it.
Zoom in on a
particular region
If you want
to get closer up but want to include a number of states, you can zoom in on a
rectangular area you specify. To do this, press Shift+Page Up or enter the View
menu and select the 'Zoom rectangle' item. The IVEO
application will say "Select corners of rectangle to zoom
in." Select two corners of the rectangle, diagonal from each other. For
example, choose the top right corner of the print rectangle at the top
of Maine and then press somewhere inside Tennessee. This will provide a
larger,
easier to explore map of the Northeast. Now you can emboss the zoomed
in view
of the region and explore it on the Touchpad just like you did with the
entire
map before. In accessibility view, users
will be asked to confirm selections with the spacebar.
- Use the pan commands to perfect
the examination area.
If you've
zoomed in on an area, but you decide you'd like to view the states above, below
or to the sides of it, simply use the 'Pan Up', 'Pan Down', 'Pan Left' or 'Pan
Right' commands in the View menu or their hot keys (Ctrl+arrow in the direction
of the pan). Choosing 'Pan Up' will move the entire picture up on the screen
(and therefore show more of the states below the area you were looking at). The
other Pan commands work similarly. The
relative size of the zoom or pan steps is user-definable in the Preferences
item in the file menu.
- Return the view to the original
view.
If you've
zoomed in, but now you want to work with the entire map again, it's easy to
return to the original view. Press Ctrl+Page Up or open the View menu, then
select the 'Fit to window' menu item. This will return the file to the way it
was when you opened it.
- Switch between print outs.
If you've
returned to the entire map view, but you want to take another look at one of
the close up maps you embossed, just reopen the zoomed in view. You can also reopen the full USA map at a
later time when some other file may be loaded.
Place the printout you want to examine on your Touchpad. Press Ctrl+B or
select the 'Open from barcode' item in the File menu and press Enter. The IVEO
program will say "Touch first barcode point." The three barcode
points are the three embossed dots located along the top edge of the print out above
the image. Touch the one farthest to the left. IVEO will prompt you to
"Press space to confirm." If you touched the correct spot, press the
space bar to move on to the next point. IVEO will then say "Touch second
barcode point." Touch the middle barcode point and then the space bar to
confirm it as prompted. The program will say "Touch third barcode
point." Touch the barcode dot farthest to the right and press the space
bar to confirm it. The program will say "barcode reading finished"
and the view of your print out will automatically load in the Viewer.
If IVEO
does not recognize the barcode, it will say "No data found for this
barcode." This may be because the Touchpad
read a touch as a barcode point you didn't intend. Try opening from the barcode
again. Alternatively the “Open from
Index” item may be used to open the file for an existing printout. Recalling the file and zoom parameters is
possible only if the printout has been made on the computer where it is viewed
or if the bar code library is transferred along with the SVG file from computer
to computer.
- Open a new file.
You don't
need to close the file you're using to open a new file, but only one file can
be open at a time. When you open a new file, the program will automatically
close the old one for you. You can not save different views of a file, but
you do not need to if you keep the printed copies of the views because you can
recall the views directly from the printouts.
The program will save any changes you've made in the original view.
- Close IVEO.
When you've
finished using IVEO, you can close it by selecting 'Exit' in the File menu or
by pressing Alt+F4.
Note: We
have pointed out only a few of the hot keys such as Ctrl+B for bar code and
Alt+F4 for exit. Most menu items have shortcut keys that you can learn from the
"IVEO Viewer Command Overview".
